Intel Working on AR Chip, as Makers of Terminator Apps Rejoice [Guts]

Embedded augmented reality-chip technology means we'll finally start using AR for good instead of filling all the app stores with Predator, Terminator and Robocop camera overlay apps. Nah, I'm just kidding, it's probably going to get worse. More »

Senseg's tactile display gets demoed on a tablet, products anticipated within 24 months

We've seen Senseg's tactile display technology demoed on a few different devices in the past, but CNET has now gotten a quick look of the company's latest tech on a tablet, along with some additional word on its future. As with previous prototypes, the screen doesn't rely on any moving parts as some other tactile displays do, but instead employs an electrostatic field-based system that allows different parts of the screen to produce varying degrees of friction. As Senseg notes, that opens up a number of interesting possibilities for gaming, as well as other applications where you may not always want to look at the screen. Of course, that tablet is still very much a prototype, but Senseg's Dave Rice says that he's "optimistic" we'll see actual products using it "within the next year," although he notes that could extend to 24 months. See the video after the break or at the source link below.

Google Talk Guru answers questions via your IM app

google talk guru answersBots -- like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave -- are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn't have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like "score detroit red wings" or "sushi R3N 1Y1."

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It's well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

Here it is, folks: The Android tablet you've been waiting to lead you out of the dual-core doldrums of 2011 and into the quad-core continuum of 2012. Welcome to the era of NVIDIA's Tegra 3 system-on-a-chip, bought to you by the ASUS Transformer Prime.

That's a lot of bluster, to be sure. But even in a short time with the Transformer Prime, you're quick to realize that this is a whole lot of hardware. NVIDIA's Tegra 2 dual-core platform brought Android tablets into the mainstream. And for as much as Tegra 2 brought to Android gaming and video playback, Tegra 3 takes it that much further.

But throw in the hardare prowess of ASUS' Transformer line -- this is the company that took a fledgling tablet and turned it into a viable Android laptop on the first try -- and what you've got is a combination of hardware and software that's leading the way into 2012 for an entire series of devices.

Check out our video hands-on above, and be sure to sift through our complete Transformer Prime review.

How Apple's Grand Central Station Store Is Screwing New York [Apple]

The Grand Central Apple store isn't even open yet and it's already becoming a massive headache for New York. First was its garish video facade. Now comes word that Apple's lease on the space is jobbing the city's transit department out of a bunch of revenue. More »

Apple II drum sequencer surfaces for chiptune composers

No, this isn't a recycled news item from the 1980s -- it's 2011, and MJ Mahon and 8 Bit Weapon have just announced the release of the Apple II DMS Drummer, a wavetable-based drum sequencer for Apple II-era machines. The monophonic synth reproduces eight drum sounds like bass, snare, rim shot, hand clap, tom, hat open, hat closed and "lazer," along with a sequencer that lets you plug in up to 16 drum patterns across 256 slots. Seems like just the thing for chiptune composers hankering for a way to make authentic eight-bit drum tracks using vintage Apple hardware. System requirements call for an Apple IIe, IIc, IIc+ or IIgs with 80-column capability and a 5.25-inch floppy drive -- you know, pretty modern stuff. A limited demo version is available, but if that doesn't satisfy, you can either buy it on a floppy for $14.95 or download a .dsk disk image for $9.95. Oh, and neither require a time-traveling DeLorean to go back to 1985.

[Thanks, Seth]

TeamPoison Busts Into the UN and Leaks Passwords [Hackers]

The tech security gurus at the United Nations just got quite a startle: A team of hackers posted about 1000 login credentials for United Nations staff members on PasteBin. Apparently a large number of the passwords were simply blank. Seriously, guys? After LulzSec? More »
