Help Bob make money in Sticks, a fun physics game

Sticks is another one of those rare games where the intro is actually worth watching. It introduces you to office worker Bob, who is basically a wage slave fantasizing about a better existence.

Then, on his way back home from another grueling day at the office, he passes a huge sign which says "Sticks." This is where the game starts.

Each level has a number of coins hovering in mid-air, and your goal is to place sticks that lead those coins to Bob -- but you only have a limited amount of wood to play with. As soon as you're done placing your sticks strategically, hit the big Play button and let nature, or rather gravity, run its course. The coins will drop down, and if you place your sticks correctly, they will roll all the way to Bob.

The soundtrack is soothing and playful, and didn't get on my nerves even after playing for quite a while. All in all, a very cute game, especially for a day at the office.

TripAdvisor app for Windows Phone 7 now available

TripAdvisor, the popular travel planning tool, has just launched an app for Windows Phone 7. Just like the mobile website, the app allows you to search for anything travel-related -- from hotels and flights to restaurants and points-of-interest to visit once you reach your destination.

Geolocation is supported, which allows TripAdvisor to quickly locate places nearby. But while that's a neat feature, it's also a bit of a downer -- because, really, it's about the only feature TripAdvisor for WP7 brings to the table that its mobile Web app doesn't already offer (its browser-based geolocation doesn't work with WP7 at the moment).

While it's nice to see Windows Phone 7 users getting some big-name apps, it'd be even nicer if we saw some packing a bit more swagger.

Still, TripAdvisor for WP7 might just be worth installing on your device if you're frequently on the go -- at least until a better browser arrives with the Mango update.

When Andreessen Horowitz invested a whopping $15 million into RapGenius this past fall, they were keen to point out that the platform can be used for decoding more than song lyrics, and extend to other forms of wordplay -- literature, historical texts, political speeches, and the like. The venture capital firm has really put their mouths where their money is. Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz have both logged onto RapGenius to add their own decodings of the memo issued this past week by Groupon's founder Andrew Mason after he'd been fired from his position as CEO.

Comparing iPad podcast apps at a glance

Earlier this week, I compared the player screens of 6 popular iPhone podcast apps, and since fair-is-fair, now it's the iPad's turn. Like with the 18 iPad weather apps and 9 iPad Twitter apps, not all iPhone podcasting apps have versions or interfaces for the iPad. However, in this case we're 5 for six. Not bad.

The players seem split on how they handle the larger iPad screen real-estate. Some just get bigger. Others go multi-colum. The bigger ones look better. The multi-column ones arguably function faster. And, as usual, it's interesting to see how the same basic control needs get expressed differently in the different apps, and how they range from simplicity to complexity.

Here, in order, from top left to bottom right, are:

1. Podcasts, Instacast 3
2. Downcast, iCatcher
3. RSSRadio

There are other factors to consider when comparing podcast apps, of course. How good and quick the experience is for finding, subscribing, and playing podcasts, whether there's sync for multiple devices, how well show notes are handled, and more.

Firefox 4 Friday: 25 million downloads, anti-aliasing, and how to make it look like Firefox 3

If you've had your head under a rock for the last few days, here's this week's Firefox news in brief: Firefox 4 was finally released.

Yes, 13 months after the initial release of Firefox 3.7 alpha 1 and four more alpha builds, a renumbering to 4.0 and 12 beta releases, and finally a release candidate (or two), Firefox 4 has been released into the wild.

Just like every other Firefox release, initial reception for the new browser has been nothing short of insane. 7.1 million downloads were registered in the first 24 hours and the download rate continued to accelerate, clocking in more than 15 million downloads after two days. At the time of writing, three days in, Firefox 4 has been downloaded over 25 million times. In case you're wondering, the United States accounts for 7 million of those downloads, just beating out Germany's Firefox-downloads-per-capita.

But now that you've installed Firefox 4 (you have, right?), what do you do now? Well, obviously, in true Download Squad fashion, it's time to tweak Firefox 4 using add-ons and about:config hacks!
